Odia-writer Indian author, poet, playwright, and novelist Jagannath Prasad Das was born on April 26, 1936. For more than 40 years, he has ruled the literary world of Odia. His body of work includes plays, short tales, a novel, essays, poems for children, and nonsensical verse. He has translated books into Odia and English from a variety of literary genres. He has produced three publications on the visual arts of the state of Odia and has conducted substantial research into its visual culture. Also, he has painted, performed in plays and movies, and actively participated in social and cultural movements.

For Das, poetry is his first love. Also, he is quoted as saying, “Let me speak all that I want to say through poetry.” He began writing poetry at a young age and in 1951 he released his first collection, which he later described as immature. After a twenty-year break, his subsequent collection Prathama Purusha was published in 1971 and had a significant influence on the Odia poetry landscape. The poems won acclaim for being original and free of current poetic trends. The anthology was soon translated, and it was favourably appreciated. The translated First Person poems were described as “genuine poetic expression in fresh metaphor” by Mulk Raj Anand. According to a critic of the Urdu translation, Das’ sensibility is easily compared to Faiz.
