‘King Lear’ was first printed in 1608, in the First Quarto edition, and First Folio edition came out in 1623 (F),.Between the two it is supposed that the Folio text is not only more accurately printed, but also much nearer to what Shakespeare wrote, than that of the Quart. The present text is based on Arden Edition edited by Kenneth Muir, which is based on F. The play was probably first performed early in 1605, with Burbage in the title role.and Armin as the Fool, Since then it has a chequered stage-history. In the recent times the great Shakespearean actors like Gielgud, Devin, Wolfit Olivier, and Scofield have played as Lear.
‘The present edition is prepared mostly keeping the requirements of Indian students in view. I have omitted the discussions on source, text etc. and I have concentrated on the changing pattern of Shakespearean studies i the last 40 years, What I feel, an Indian student needs,is to understand the vital richness of King Lear which ina way should become a part of his experience and existence.I will feel my labour rewarded if my analysis and critical notes can help the students to understand and enjoy ‘King Lear’ better. I need not say how heavily Iam indebted to the major Shakespeare critics of the present time but for whose sustained anc very intelligent work such an edition as I have prepared would not have been possible.
