The renowned academician Mohanty was born in Shyamsundarpur in the Kendrapara district in 1932. He acquired his early education at the renowned PM Academy in Cuttack. In addition, he completed studies at Leeds University in the UK, Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages in Hyderabad, and Ravenshaw College.
The English professor Mohanty began his career as a lecturer at Ravenshaw College before moving on to teach at BJB College, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur University, and Utkal University, where he eventually resigned in 1992.
He got the 2003 Central Sahitya Akademi Prize for his work on the Odia poem “Suryashnata,” which made him a renowned critic and editor. Also, he wrote more than 20 books and 200 essays in both English and Odia, including works on the canon and history of Odia literature.
Mohanty, who also obtained fellowships from the Central Institute of Indian Languages and scholarships from the British Council, also edited the English and Odia editions of the Bhubaneswar Review. He spent a significant amount of time working with both the Central and Odisha Sahitya Academies.
