It might not be inappropriate to translate the following passages from the prospectus while presenting to the public this book of the sents of On1ya ann Enouisy Drorionarizs that the writer has contracted to provide.
“The Oriya Dictionary with Oriya synonyms and definitions is in the author’s opinion important to an improvement of the language and will soon bear fruit for the benefit of the European as well as the Native learner, even if it may initially be needed by Europeans.
“In all uncultivated languages, there is a considerable deal of variation in word spelling, and this is especially true of Oriya, where many words are written in such a variety of ways that it is frequently very difficult for one man to read another man’s writing.
“Ju all uncultivated languages great diversity in the spelling of words prevails: this is emphatically the case with Oriya, many words of which are so variously written that one man usually finds great difficulty in reading the writing of another, It is manifest, therefore, that primary step in the cultivation of the language must be an attempt to settle the Orthography. This has been the Author’s aim in this branch of his undertaking, and m which he has been chiefly assisted by his pundit, Bhobananund Niaya AJunhar.
