Hindus use the endonym Sanatana Dharma to describe Hinduism. It alludes to Hinduism’s “eternal” truth and teachings. “The natural and eternal way to live” is another translation. Along with the more widely used term Hindu Dharma, the phrase is used in Indian languages to refer to Hinduism. Sanatana Dharma is another name for the collection of “eternal” or unalterable obligations and practises. Sanatani is the term used by Sanatana Dharma adherents to identify themselves.

In traditional Sanskrit literature, such as the Manusmrti and the Bhagavata Purana, the word “dharma santana” may be found. In order to avoid using the term “Hindu,” the phrase was reintroduced in the late 19th century during the Hindu revivalism movement as a label for Hinduism as a religion.

Sanatana Dharma is now exclusively connected to Hinduism. Sanatana dharma is a phrase that is now used to denote a “traditional” or sanatani viewpoint as opposed to the socio-political Hinduism that is espoused by organisations like the Arya Samaj. Now it is being emphasised that Sanatan Dharma cannot be rigid; it must be inclusive without excluding the best and most complete knowledge to guide the karmic process, especially as Sanatan has no beginning and no end. This is in stark contrast to the efforts made by the Lahore Sanatana Dharma Sabha to preserve the Hindu tradition against the onslaught of reform.
