Bhubaneshwar, a city in north-eastern India’s Orissa province, prospered as a seat of Hindu devotion beginning in the 7th century CE. It is one of the most spectacular ancient temple sites in all of India due to the abundance of well-preserved sandstone temples that are all centred around the holy lake Bindusarowar.

After spending many years at Kashi and realising that it was too crowded, Lord Shiva decided to meditate at Ekamra Kanana in Bhubaneswar. Because of this, Bhubaneswar also goes by the moniker Gupta Kashi (Hidden Kashi).Goddess Durga accompanied Shiva and watched over him when he meditated while dressed as a Gopalini. Kruti and Basha, two demons, were residing in the same jungle at the same time. They were attracted toward the beauty of Goddess Durga who had taken the rupa as a gopalini and wanted to marry her. Goddess Durga told them “if both of you can put me on your shoulders and give me a ride around the area, I will marry both of you”. But once Durga sat on the demons, she pressed them downwards the earth to the Patala and thus got rid of them.

But Durga was thirsty and exhausted as a result of this. She therefore requested water from Shiva. Shiva used his Trisula to carve out Bindu Sagar, and then he ordered his bull to go get water from it to offer to Durga. This is how Bindu Sagar (Holy Pond) in Bhubaneswar came to be. Other gods and goddesses soon followed and landed in Bhubaneswar. The celestial architect Vishwakarma was commissioned by Lord Shiva to construct several temples for each of them. More information about Bhubaneswar’s mythology may be found in the Kapila Samhita.
