The Buddhacharita, an epic poem on the life of the Buddha in the Sanskrit mahakavya form, during the beginning of the second century CE.
In contrast to earlier treatments like Mahavastu and Lalitavistara (“Full Description of the Play”), the author has written an account of the Buddha’s life and teachings that is not only aesthetically organised but also restricted in the presentation of the miracles of Gautam Buddha. Along with a keen interest in love, battle, and statecraft, a court poet’s grasp of Indian mythology and pre-Buddhist philosophy is also evident in his writing.
