A biography titled “Atibadi Jagannatha Parikrama” was released by Nityananda Satapathy in 1975. Atibadi Jagannatha Dasa was an author and poet who wrote in the Odia language. He was one of the Panchasakha, the five greatest poets of Odia literature. His work includes the Odia Bhagabata. On the day of Radhastami in 1487 (some sources suggest in 1490), he was born at Kapilesvarapur or Kapilesvar grama, one of the 16 historic Sasana villages, 14 km from Puri in the direction of Brahmagiri. He is regarded as having a deep bond with Srimati Radhika because he was born on Radhastami.

Padmavati Devi was his mother, and Bhagavan Das, a member of the Kaushiki Gotra, was his father. His teachings of the Bhagavata Purana were so alluring that King Prataparudra bestowed upon him the title of “Purana Panda” as he was reciting it in the Lord’s Jagannatha shrine. Jagannatha Dasa, the Purana Panda’s son, used to study the Bhagavata by his father’s side. When Chaitanya saw the 18-year-old lad reading the Brahma stuti from the Gopa lila (10th Canto) while seated next to the Bata Ganesha Deity in Sri Mandira one day, he honoured him by giving him a garment and the title of Atibadi .

Odia Bhagabata was written by Dasa. It had a significant impact on how the Odia language was standardised. Its popularity in Odisha reached the point that many houses there worshipped it. In the past, bhagabata tungis, or little houses or rooms, were common in the villages of Odisha, where locals gathered to hear recitations of Dasa’s Bhagabata. Many of its lyrics have been used as proverbs by people in Odisha. Each of the work’s 12 volumes has between 10 and 30 chapters. 50 to 300 stanzas make up each chapter. The Odia Bhagabata was translated into English by Gannath Das. Readings from Bhagabata is the English translation.
