Indian lawyer and social reformer Madhusudan Das established Utkal Sammilani in 1903 to promote the unification of Odisha as well as the state’s social and economic growth. He played a significant role in the development of Orissa Province, which became Odisha on April 1, 1936. He was also Orissa’s first graduate and a supporter of the state. Kulabruddha, Madhu Babu, and Utkal Gouraba are some of his other names.On April 28, Odisha commemorates his birthday as Lawyers’ Day.
He was the first Odia to join both India’s Central Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. He established Utkal Sammilani, which served as the basis for Odia nationalism. The push for the union of Odia-speaking territories was led by Utkal Sammilani.This led to the formations of state of Odisha on 1 April 1936. He was also the first Odia to travel to England.He founded the Utkal Tannery in 1905, a factory producing shoes and other leather products. In 1897 he founded the Orissa Art Ware Works. With his support, the Tarakasiwork of silver ornaments achieved commendable feet.
