Poet and author Atibadi Jagannatha Dasa spoke Odia. He was one of the Panchasakha, the five greatest poets of Odia literature. His work includes the Odia Bhagabata.
In a well-established Brahmin family of Kaushiki Gotra, Dasa was born on Radhastami in 1491 at Kapileswarpur Sasana, one of the 16 historic Sasana villages in Puri. His father was Bhagabana Dasa, and his mother was Padmabati Debi.
His father was a Bhagavata speaker in Utkala. Bhagbana Dasa was given the title “Purana Panda” by King Purushottama Deva, the then-ruling king of Utkala, who was pleased with his explanation of the Bhagavata. He moulded Jagannatha into a Purana Panda who would obey him.
