Gopal Chhotray is an Oriyan playwright. In 1916, he was born in the state of Orissa. He is credited with creating the Geetinatya, or “plays in verse,” genre for Orissan theatre. In the late 1940s, his plays aided in rekindling interest in Orissan performing arts.
He is regarded as a significant theatre figure in Indian theatrical history. Among of his most well-known works include Sahadarmini, Panchanatika, Na Pahu Rati, Kapatapasha, Hasyarasara nataka, and Babu Candramani.He began his career as an amateur stage performer in Cuttack’s Bharati Theatres, but quickly rose to prominence as an Odia stage playwright and screenwriter. After “Pheria,” his early plays from the 1950s, like “Bharasa” and “Para Kalam,” gained recognition as original works.
