In publishing this Oriya-English Dictionary a few words of introduction appear necessary. It is a new compilation based on those of Rev. Amos Satton and Mr. William Brooks. Those who are acquainted with Mr. Brooks’ book will find that ‘many words not in ordinary use have been omitted and a large number of other useful words introduced. The book has been increased by abont 40 pages. It is not claimed that the present compilation is in any way exhaustive, but it is hoped that it may be found more useful than its predecessors. In giving the English equivalents of the Oriya words an attempt has been made to put the one mainly used in the first place, those following being in order of importance, as far as possible, Thus, in some cases, the root meaning of a word may be given the last place. This plan has been adopted so that non-Oriyas consulting the book may be able to know, with some amount of certainty, when several equivalents are given for one Oriya word, which of them is in common use.
