In the Indian subcontinent from 268 to 232 BCE, Ashoka, also known as Ashoka the Great and Chakraravartin Samrat Ashoka, was the third Mauryan Emperor of Magadha. His empire, which had Pataliputra as its capital, stretched across a sizable portion of the Indian subcontinent, from what is now Afghanistan in the west to what is now Bangladesh in the east. He is recognised with being a key factor in the development of Buddhism throughout ancient Asia and is known as its patron.

Since the decipherment of materials written in Brahmi script in the 19th century, Ashoka has gained recognition as one of the greatest Indian monarchs. Ashoka’s existence as a historical emperor had virtually been forgotten. The emblem of the modern Republic of India is an adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka. Ashoka’s wheel, the Ashoka Chakra is adopted at the centre of the National Flag of India.
