The 1964 publication Mati Matala is a masterpiece in the Odia language and was the first work from Odisha to get the coveted Jnanapith award in 1974. The post-independence sociopolitical upheaval of Odisha’s rural life is eloquently shown in the book. The inter-personal relationships between the characters are skilfully and subtly depicted in this enormous novel of epic dimensions, which is nearly 1000 pages long and took the author more than 10 years to complete. This work was an experiment in itself because it allowed the author to examine how his own mind changes over time. Bengali and Hindi translations of the book are available.
