    Motilal Ghose, Editor of the ‘Amrita Bazar Patrika’, Calcutta; s. of late Babu Hari Narayan Ghose, a leading pleader of Jessore; b. 1845; educ: Krishnagar College; fondly attached to journalism from the beginning; first started the ‘Amrita Bazar Patrika’ in conjunction with his well-known brother, the late Babu Shishir Kumar Ghose, 1868; conducted the paper in the Bengali language for a few years; removed it to Calcutta, 1872; changed the paper as an Anglo-Vernacular one and conducted it for six years; changed it completely into an English paper on the very next day after the passing of the Vernacular Press Act of 1878; converted the “Patrika” from a weekly into a daily paper 1890; has been in sole charge of the paper since 1888; distinguished for originality, humour, vigour, and perspicuity in writing; a sincere but an uncompromising critic of the Government; has not chosen to serve in any of the Councils of the Empire; presided at the Bengal Provincial Conference held at Krishnagar in April 1915, and delivered a thought provoking address; was the only Bengali gentleman who was accorded an interview by H.M. the King-Emperor George V when he visited India as Prince of Wales.
