Navasambad launched in 1887 as a weekly newspaper under the editorship of Bhupatinath Basu. Its masthead declared it to be a vehicle for religion, politics, equality, literature,philosophy and science related writings. It carried a large proportion of writings on Brahma reliogion. It faced controversy for some of its writings. Its commentaries on textbooks created a lot of debate. It ceased publication in December 1887 only after a year in existence.
