Pandita Gopabandhu is a prominent figure in Odia literature and social reform, and his life story is truly inspiring. The biography book on his life, written by Sriram Chandra Das and published in 1964 with a re-publication in 2004, provides a comprehensive insight into the life of this great man.

Born on 9 October 1877 in the village of Suando in Odisha, Gopabandhu was born into a prestigious Brahmin family. His ancestors were scholars and esteemed members of society, and Gopabandhu was expected to carry on the family legacy of academic excellence. He received his early education at his village school before moving on to Puri to further his studies.

Gopabandhu’s education continued at the Ravenshaw College in Cuttack, where he excelled in his studies and developed a keen interest in literature and social reform. It was during this time that he became deeply influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and was inspired to work towards the betterment of society.

In 1909, Gopabandhu co-founded the Satyabadi School in Puri, which aimed to provide quality education to the underprivileged children of the region. This marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to the cause of education and social reform. He firmly believed that education was the key to uplifting the downtrodden and empowering them to lead better lives.

Gopabandhu was also a prolific writer and journalist, using his pen to advocate for social justice and the rights of the marginalized. He founded the weekly newspaper “Satyabadi” in 1919, through which he addressed various social issues and promoted nationalist ideals. His writing inspired many to join the freedom struggle and fight against British colonial rule.

In addition to his literary and educational pursuits, Gopabandhu was actively involved in the Indian National Congress and played a crucial role in the Non-Cooperation Movement led by Gandhi. He was imprisoned several times for his anti-British activities, but this only served to strengthen his resolve to work towards India’s independence.

Gopabandhu’s contributions to society and his commitment to the welfare of the less fortunate earned him the title of “Pandita,” meaning a learned and wise person. He was deeply respected and admired by the people of Odisha for his selfless service and dedication to the cause of social reform.

The biography book on Pandita Gopabandhu by Sriram Chandra Das is a fitting tribute to this remarkable man and his extraordinary life. It provides a detailed account of his upbringing, education, and his tireless efforts to bring about positive change in society. Through his words and actions, Gopabandhu continues to inspire generations of Odias to strive for a more just and equitable society.

In conclusion, Pandita Gopabandhu’s legacy lives on through his writings, educational institutions, and the enduring impact he had on the people of Odisha. His life story is a testament to the power of education, social reform, and the unwavering commitment to the betterment of society.
