Mahamahopaddyaya Chandrasekhar Sinha Samanta (1835–1904), also known as Pathani Samanta among his fellow Odias, was a masterful naked-eye observer of the heavens. He was one of the few so-called “Siddhantic” astronomers who lived and worked long after the period of Siddhanta that was officially recognised. He was an astronomer who practised during a time when other locations were employing cutting-edge technology. Even still, experts on Samanta’s work continue to be astounded by the accuracy of the information he acquired using crude instruments.
His magnum opus, “Siddhant Darpan,” details his meticulous observations and analyses. His original Sanskrit book, translations into Odia, Hindi, and English, as well as remarks and mathematical interpretations of his work, are all available here in digital form.
