Dash Benhur was born in Khandapara, in the Nayagarh district, in 1953. He completed a post-graduate degree in political science, and in the 1970s, he began working as a lecturer at Bhadrak College. Here, he met Jayant Biswal, also a young colleague, who went by the name Raja. Both of them quickly won the students’ favour. Being a skilled essayist and columnist set Jayant Biswal apart. After beginning with short stories, Dash Benhur transitioned to authoring children’s books and newspaper columns.
Jitendra Narayan Dash, also known as Jita by his elders but better known as Dash Benhur, goes by the pen name of Dash Benhur. After seeing the critically acclaimed 1959 picture Ben Hur, which won eleven Oscars, he decided to use a pseudonym.
