Gopal Chandra Praharaj (1872-1945), who assembled this enormous dictionary containing a significant amount of encyclopaedic material, had it published between 1931 and 1940. Over 1,85,000 root words are presented, along with their meanings in Bengali and Hindi, along with their equivalents in Odia and English, on approximately 10,000 pages spread across seven volumes.

Praharaj had a unique existence. Although he was a lawyer by trade, his prose writings hold a unique place in Odia literature. His sarcastic wit and satire targeted many of his contemporaries. Yet, there was some controversy around his personal and political opinions.

Pitambari is credited by Praharaj as being his most significant collaborator in the creation of Bhasakosha. Yet she has also become embroiled in Praharaj’s family disputes and his tragic death. With Praharaj’s passing, Pitambari’s life became incredibly difficult, and she ultimately passed away without any means of support.
