Mahamahopaddyaya Chandrasekhar Sinha Samanta (1835–1904), better known to the Odias as Pathani Samanta, was a skilled observer of the heavens with the naked eye. He was one of the few so-called “Siddhantic” astronomers who had lived and operated far after the acknowledged Siddhantic era. He was an astronomer who lived and worked at an era when other places were using cutting-edge equipment. Even so, people who have studied Samanta’s work are still in awe of the accuracy of the data he gathered using improvised tools.
His masterpiece, “Siddhant Darpan,” chronicles his careful observations and interpretations. Here are digitised versions of his original Sanskrit book, translations into Odia, Hindi, and English, as well as comments and mathematical interpretations of his work.
