On April 20, 1914, Gopinath Mohanty was born in Nagabali, Cuttack. He graduated with a master’s in English literature and had a stellar academic career. From 1938 until his retirement in 1969, he was a member of the Orissa Administrative Service. He came into intimate contact with the tribal people (particularly the “Kondh” and “Paraja”) during his early appointment as an administrator in the Koraput District, and he had a special interest in studying their languages and way of life. The tribal way of life and society are themes in some of his most significant works of art during this period.
