In the Odia language, the term “Bahuda” signifies “Return.” The three chariots’ return trip to the Jagannath Temple is known as the Bahuda Yatra. following a week-long stay within the Gundicha shrine.Bhagwan Jagannath enters a four-month slumber beginning on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi. Prabhu Jagannath must first visit his principal temple. The trek to return to the main temple on Dashami day is hence known as the Bahuda Yatra after the eighth day of the Rath Yatra.

The deities remain there for seven days in their Garden House, often referred to as their birthplace, or adapa mandapa. The magnificent return journey takes place on Bahuda Jatra, the ninth day of the festival. They briefly pause on their way back to eat some poda pitha, a cake composed of rice, lentils, jaggery, and coconut that their aunt, mausima, had provided. When the gods return to the main temple, they don the suna besa, or golden clothing, which has hands, arms, and a crown made of solid gold. Adhara pana, a sweet beverage, is also given to them in enormous cylindrical earthen pots that stretch all the way to their mouths. They are also offered sweet drinks, adhara pana, on huge cylindrical earthen pots reaching up to their lips. They are taken down from the chariots in a ritual descent to enter the temple.

However, Lord Jagannatha is prevented from entering the shrine by his celestial spouse Lakshmi. Her friends, represented by a group of inside servants, express her rage, envy, and exasperation. Responses from a different group representing Lord Jagannatha include appeals and compliments. The heavenly pair ultimately reconciles after acting out the daily home disputes of common mortals. The temple door is then opened, allowing the gods to return to their jewelled throne, the ratna sinsahna.
