Gouraba Utkala Madhusudan Das was born on April 28, 1848, which is also known as Odisha’s Lawyer’s Day and the Odia Swabhiman Divas (also known as the Odia Honour Day). He was a supporter of the state, a writer, the first member of the College of London Missionary Society, and a social reformer. He was known as Utkal Gouraba (Pride of Utkal), Kulabruddha (Grand Old Man), and a poet and liberation warrior. The Father of Odia Nationalism, Madhu Babu was his well-known moniker. In 1881, he founded the Cuttack Town School and served as the society’s editor for the Brahma Dharma Preaching Society. He started the Utkal Union Movement under Utkal Sammilani’s leadership. He placed a strong emphasis on the state’s economic growth as one of Odisha’s initial modern industrial pioneers. He made significant financial investments, founding the Utkal Tannery in 1905 and Odisha Art Wares in 1897. He helped the Swadeshi Movement gain popularity in Odisha. In the Bihar and Orissa Legislative Council in 1913, he introduced a motion about the expansion of railway service in the state. Madhusudan Das is credited with creating modern-day Odisha.
