The compilation of this dictionary was begun in 1899 by the Rev. J.G. Pike of Cuttack. He was assisted by Babu Samson C. Das, B.A., and the general plan of the work was decided by them. Both these gentlemen are now dead. The present compiler was appointed to the task in 1906, while at Berhampur, Ganjam. His transfers from Berhampur to Cuttack, Cuttack to Russellkonda, Russellkonda to Berhampur, Berhampur to Padampur, and finally Padampur to Cuttack, will somewhat explain the slow progress of work. In publishing this Oriya-English Dictionary a few words of introduction appear necessary. It is a new compilation based on those of Rev. Amos Satton and Mr. William Brooks. Those who are acquainted with Mr. Brooks’ book will find that ‘many words not in ordinary use have been omitted and a large number of other useful words introduced.
