Bamana Purana is a renowned Odia book that was published in the year 2017 by Gopinath Das. This book is a treasure trove of mythology and folklore from the rich cultural heritage of Odisha. One of the most fascinating stories in Bamana Purana is the tale of the demon Mahisasur and the goddess Gauri.

According to Hindu mythology, Mahisasur was a powerful demon who wreaked havoc on the earth. He had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that made him invincible and nearly impossible to defeat. With his newfound strength, Mahisasur began terrorizing the world, causing destruction and chaos wherever he went.

In desperation, the gods turned to the divine mother Gauri for help. Gauri, also known as Parvati, is the consort of Lord Shiva and a powerful goddess in her own right. She was determined to put an end to Mahisasur’s reign of terror and restore peace and order to the world.

Gauri then assumed the form of the warrior goddess Durga and waged a fierce battle against Mahisasur. The battle between the two raged on for days, with neither side willing to back down. In a final act of desperation, Mahisasur transformed himself into a buffalo in an attempt to evade Durga’s wrath.

Undeterred, Durga mounted her lion and continued to fight the demon in his new form. After a long and grueling battle, Durga finally managed to slay Mahisasur and restore peace to the world. Her victory was celebrated by all the gods and goddesses, who hailed her as the savior of humanity.

Another intriguing story in Bamana Purana is the tale of the dwarf incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu took on the form of a dwarf named Vamana in order to defeat the demon king Bali. Bali was a powerful ruler who had conquered the three worlds and was performing a grand ritual to cement his dominion.

Vamana, disguised as a humble Brahmin, approached Bali and asked for a gift of land. Bali, known for his generosity, readily agreed and offered Vamana whatever he desired. Vamana then requested only as much land as he could cover in three steps.

Amused by the dwarf’s modest request, Bali granted his wish. To everyone’s surprise, Vamana suddenly grew in size and covered the entire earth with his first step, the heavens with his second step, and finally, he asked Bali where he could place his third step. Realizing that Vamana was none other than Lord Vishnu himself, Bali bowed down in reverence and offered his own head for the final step.

These timeless tales from Bamana Purana are just a small glimpse of the rich cultural heritage and mythology of Odisha. BGopinath Das’s book serves as a valuable resource for those interested in exploring the fascinating world of Hindu mythology and folklore. It is a must-read for anyone looking to delve deeper into the ancient stories that have shaped the beliefs and traditions of the people of Odisha.
