In the month of Bhadrab, every Wednesday is designated for budhei osha (fasting). In the shape of a “curry-stone” embellished with vermilion, collyrium, and flowers, Budhei Bamana is worshipped. Budhei Bamana was implored to bestow boons during this fast, including the ability to heal leprosy and other contagious diseases, restore the sight of the blind, and the ability to have children. According to a tale, after appeasing the goddess via their fasts, a pregnant Brahmin lady had a safe birth and a wine dealer’s wife was healed of her leprosy. The entire plot of Bhudhei Bamana is based on the exploits of a business couple from Magadha, a couple from a lower class, and Bandhu Mohanti from Jajpur.
