The Chandi Purana by Sarala Das, written in Odia, heralds the beginning of the age of traditional Odia literature and is based on the account of Durga’s incarnation of Chandi as told in the Vishnu Purana. However, it is not simply a fresh vernacular version of an old tale that was previously recounted in Sanskrit; rather, its goal is to convey one of the major themes of Indian mythology to the common people that myth marginalises and history excludes. And in doing so, the poet makes adjustments depending on regional faiths, ideologies, and traditions. He describes Sarala Chandi of Kanakpur, Odisha, who has been “worshipped for one lakh and thirty-two thousand years of Kaliyuga” in the introduction to the Odia tale of Chandi. Second, the tale appears in Sanskrit writings.
