One of the oldest Zamindaries in Southern India was Ghumsar. It is thought that the Sailodvavas were in charge here. The Bhanja dynasty thereafter rose to power in all its splendour. The 1350 square mile estate of Ghumsar was covered with mountains and thick woods. 500 square miles of the entire area were mountainous areas, with the remaining being plain plains. In Ghumsar, from 1753 to 1866, there were ongoing uprisings and rebellions against foreign rule. It is the oldest Zamindary in Ganjam. The whole North-Western portion of the Bhanjanagar revenue sub-division is now included in its scope. The indigenous Kondh people lived in these regions. The non-indigenous population of the plains, primarily Odias, made up one-third of the total population.
