Modern Odia play was mostly created by Gopal Chhotray was born in Orissa state in 1916. The tone and content of Odia play had undergone a significant transformation thanks to him. While he was born on April 20, 1916, in the village of Puranagarh in the Jagatsinghpur district, he lived all of his life in Cuttack. On January 22, 2003, he died.

In the years since he published Pheria, his first original drama, in 1946, he has written more than 15 other plays. He has created 8 dramas based on well-known works in Odia. Most of them were successfully staged. There was a time when his plays were performed daily by the two professional theatrical companies in Cuttack. For more than three decades, he ruled the Odia drama scene.
