Oriyan playwright Gopal Chhotray writes plays. He was born in Orissa state in 1916. He is recognised as the innovator who introduced the Geetinatya, or “plays in verses,” genre to Orissan drama. His plays helped revive interest in Orissan performing arts in the late 1940s.

Throughout a period of more than three decades, Gopal Chhotray dominated Oriya professional theatre. He authored more than 15 original stage plays and 8 adaptations of renowned Oriya novels starting with Pheria (Come Back) in 1946, the majority of which were huge successes on professional stages. There have been times when his plays have been performed simultaneously in both of Cuttack’s professional theatres, which host daily performances.

From its founding in 1948, Gopal Chhotray has been connected to All India Radio (AIR), Cuttack. After working as a freelancer for several years, he joined AIR, Cuttack in 1956 as an internal screenplay writer and remained there until 1975.

He created more than 500 radio plays, including musicals and features, and made it commonplace for people to listen to his works. Among the earliest chain-play the AIR produced was his monthly serial “Purapuri Paribarika” (Entirely A Family Affair), which ran continuously for three years.
