One of the main figures in the Ramayana is Hanuman, a follower of Rama. The Shaiva religion holds that the god Hanuman is a manifestation of Shiva as well. Folklore extols Hanuman’s virtues. The Hanuman Chalisa describes the attributes of the deity Hanuman, including his might, bravery, knowledge, celibacy (brahmacharya), loyalty to Rama, and the several titles by which he is known. The Hanuman Chalisa is frequently recited or chanted in religious settings. Millions of Hindus chant the Hanuman Chalisa every day, the most well-known hymn in honour of Hanuman.

The poet-saint Tulsidas, who lived in the 16th century CE, is credited with writing the Hanuman Chalisa. In the hymn’s final lyric, he makes a reference to himself. The 39th stanza of the Hanuman Chalisa states that anyone who says it with complete devotion to Hanuman shall get Hanuman’s blessing. It is a widely held belief among Hindus that reciting the Chalisa seeks Hanuman’s heavenly assistance in serious issues.
