The Iron Lady, or Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, was India’s first female prime minister and a prominent figure in Indian political history. She served as the Indian National Congress’s symbol. Jawaharlal Nehru, the father of Indira Gandhi, was the first Indian Prime Minister to back Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for independence. The second prime minister to hold office for a lengthier period of time was Indira Gandhi, who presided from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her death in 1984. She remained Chief of Staff in the highly integrated Jawaharlal Nehru government from 1947 until 1964. She was chosen to lead the Congress in 1959.

As prime minister, Indira Gandhi was viewed as unusual, ferocious, and weak due to the concentration of power. She declared a national emergency in the nation from 1975 to 1977 in order to stifle the political opposition. India acquired popularity in South Asia as a result of significant political, military, and economic developments made while she was in charge. In 2001, India Today Magazine named Indira Gandhi the best prime minister in history. She was dubbed the “Woman of the Millennium” by BBC in 1999.
