Famous Odia poet Gangadhar Meher (1862–1924) was known as Swabhab Kavi (the natural poet) and was frequently compared to a literary Midas who turned every word into gold. Despite being from a low-income weaving family and lacking formal education, he taught himself how to read and write Odia. By reading a variety of books, he also learned Bengali, Hindi, and Sanskrit.

Gangadhar Meher began writing poetry at a very young age. His early writings are influenced by the style and methodology of the early Odia writers. Pranaya Ballari, his debut piece of poetry, was published in 1889. Indumati, Kichaka Badha, Chandrahasa, Tapaswini, Prithiviraj Chauhan, Utkal Lakshmi, and Karna Parva are just a few of the other Kabyas he authored. He also wrote many short poems on various themes, such as nature, love, devotion, patriotism and social issues.Gangadhar Meher also believed that ‘Karma determines rebirth’. And this view is clearly reflected in his long narrative poem ‘Indumati’ .
