Indian lawyer and social reformer Madhusudan Das established Utkal Sammilani in 1903 to promote the unification of Odisha as well as the state’s social and economic growth. He was a key player in the establishment of Orissa Province, which is now known as Odisha in India, on April 1, 1936. He was also Orissa’s first graduate and a supporter of the state. He also goes by the names Madhu Babu, Kulabruddha (Grand Old Man), and Utkal Gouraba. On April 28, Odisha commemorates his birthday as Lawyers’ Day.
