In the south-western part of the state of Odisha, Kalahandi is located between 19.3 and 21.5 N latitudes and 82.20 and 83.47 E longitudes. It is bordered to the north by the Balangir and Nuapada districts, to the south by the Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Rayagada districts, and to the east by the Rayagada, Kandhamal, and Boudh districts. It is the 7th most populous district in Odisha, with an area of 8,364.89 square kilometres. The district’s administrative centre lies in Bhawanipatna, which is practically in the middle of the district. Kalahandi is divided into the subdivisions of Bhawanipatna and Dharamgarh. Indravati, Udanti, Hati, Utei, Sagada, Rahul, Nagabali, Mudra, etc. are further notable rivers. Kalahandi’s geography is made up of plain land, hills, and mountains. Hills are all around Kalahandi. Its boundary with the districts of Nabarangpur, Koraput, Rayagada, and Kandhamal is rugged and hilly. Despite having a third of its territory covered by deep jungle vegetation, the region is mostly agricultural. There is relatively little industry.
