It is the 7th most populous district in Odisha, with an area of 8,364.89 square kilometres. The district’s administrative centre lies in Bhawanipatna, which is practically in the middle of the district. Kalahandi is divided into the subdivisions of Bhawanipatna and Dharamgarh. Despite having a third of its territory covered by deep jungle vegetation, the region is mostly agricultural. There is relatively little industry.
