On January 13, 1843, Fakir Mohan Senapati was born at Mallikashpur, Balasore. Laxman Charan Senapati and Tulsi Devi Senapati, members of a Khandayat family, were his parents. At the young age of one year and five months, he lost his father, who passed away in Bhubaneswar from cholera.

A master of the short story form, he breathed new life into the gloomy and hopeless world of Odia literature. In Odia literature, his sense of comedy is still unmatched. He abandoned romantic topics in favour of writing about the average person and his issues. Senapati can legitimately be compared to Premchand and Bibhutibhusan Banerjee, two of the greatest novelists of the 20th century. Despite not having received any official education, he excelled as a teacher, painter, and administrator. Odia Nationalism predominated in his writings. Senapati has cemented his reputation as an outstanding prose writer in Odia as a recognised literary poet.
