One of Odisha’s most celebrated sons, Pandit Nilakantha Das, entered the political and literary spheres during a pivotal time in the state’s history when Odisha lacked a political identity on the Indian map and the Odia language was on the verge of extinction. He tirelessly battled for Odisha’s political and linguistic recognition and supported the aspirations of Utkala Gaurab Madhusudan Das, Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, and all other Odia-loving individuals.
He worked tirelessly as Madhusudan Das’ right-hand man to fulfil the goal of establishing the autonomous Odisha Province in 1936. His legislative work in the Delhi Central Assembly led to the formation of Odisha as the nation’s first province based on linguistic distinction.
His thorough investigation of the development of the Odia language produced a number of findings that contributed to the designation of Odia as the sixth Indian classical language. Odia is also the first member of the Indo-Aryan language family to be classified as classical. Nilakantha Das is also regarded as the Utkala Guru due to his unfathomable knowledge in numerous significant domains.
