Social reformer, businessman, politician, and founding editor of the Dainik ASHA newspaper—the first Odia daily—Sashibhusan Rath was based in Brahmapur. He is renowned for being referred to as Ganjam Byaghra, or The Tiger of Ganjam.
This courageous liberation fighter’s reporter was born on January 1st, 1885 in the village of Soroda in the Ganjam area. He finished his primary schooling at Rasalkonda Board School and continued his studies there through lower secondary. He transferred to Parlakhemindi once his studies there were finished. From there, he travelled to Bombay, where he studied Gujrati. He then relocated to Pune and worked in a leather industry, where he learned how to skin animals. But he had to return to Odisha because he was unable to stay there for too long. He briefly worked at the Utkal Tannery before moving to Kolkata to organise the Odias.
Following his return from Kolkata, he founded the newspaper “Asha” in Berhampur, which in 1928 developed into a daily publication. He was detained in 1930 but released in 1931 because he was constantly reporting on civil disobedience and the salt satyagraha and aiding it in the Ganjam area.
