One of Hinduism’s eighteen Major Puranas, or puranas, is the Padma Purana. It is an encyclopaedic work with extensive parts on Shiva, Shakti, and Vishnu as well as being named for the lotus in which the creator deity Brahma manifested.

The Padma Purana manuscripts have persisted until the present day in a variety of variants, two of which are notable and vastly diverse and can be linked to the eastern and western parts of India, respectively. One of the lengthy texts, it claims to have 55,000 verses, however the actual number found in the surviving copies is closer to 50,000.

The first eighteen chapters of the first portion (Khanda) of the book are noteworthy because they describe lake Pushkar, close to Ajmer in Rajasthan, as a Brahma pilgrimage place, followed by chapters with a Vishnu-focused portrayal. The second section of the work, Bhumikhanda, is mostly a compendium of tales that doubles as a pilgrimage manual. The third section of the book, Svargakhanda, covers cosmology, Indian geography, its rivers, and geographical descriptions.
