The Paika Bidroha, also known as the Paika Rebellion. Early in 1817, there was an armed uprising against Company control in India. Under the leadership of Bakshi Jagabandhu, the Paikas rose up in rebellion. Projecting Lord Jagannath as the emblem of Odia unity, the insurrection swiftly spread throughout most of Odisha before being crushed by the Company’s forces.
