Odia dramatist Gopal Chhotray is a Central Literary Academy Award winner. He made an effort to introduce improvements in the pala, gahan, and song theatre of Orissa. His plays are entertaining depictions of everyday life for the average person. In hundreds of theatre and radio productions, he has written dialogue.

In the Indian provinces of Bihar and Orissa, in the village of Puranagarh in the Jagatsinghpur district, Gopal Chhotray was born in 1916. He is regarded as one of the main designers of contemporary Oriya theatre. He significantly altered the theme and structure of Oriya plays, as well as their overall morphology. He delivered them from the grip of opera and melodrama as well as the oppressive pull of nearby Bengal.

Throughout a period of more than three decades, Gopal Chhotray dominated Oriya professional theatre. He authored more than 15 original stage plays and 8 adaptations of renowned Oriya novels starting with Pheria (Come Back) in 1946, the majority of which were huge successes on professional stages. There was a time when his plays were performed daily in both of Cuttack’s professional theatres.
