An important character in Odisha’s history and culture is Fakir Mohan. He was not just a passionate supporter of his native tongue but also a prolific writer and social reformer. His literary works gave Odia literature a fresh start. He introduced prose in a new light to Odisha. He was courageous enough to achieve this under the gloom and sorrow that shrouded the realm of Odia language and literature. And he could pull it off with a hint of laughter. In the annals of Odia literature, his dry humour and cutting satire still stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Through his poetry, Fakir Mohan explored the world of literature.Pushpamala (1894), Upahar (1895), and Abasare Basare (1908) are his poetry books. His lengthy poetry satire “Utkal Bhramana (1892)” describes the social, political, and cultural climate in Odisha at the time. He portrayed the life and teachings of Gautam Buddha in his ‘Baudhabatara Kavya (1909)’.
