There is a profound hidden meaning between Krishna and the gopis or cowherds. Understand the Vedanta-based spiritual significance of Lord Krishna’s Rasakrida. In the classic Krishna narrative as told in Hindu writings like the Bhagavata Purana and literature like the Gita Govinda, Krishna dances with Radha and her sakhis in the Rasa lila (also known as Raas Leela) or Rasa dance. The ‘Raslila of Braj and Manipuri Classical Dance’ (Vrindavan), also known as Natwari Nritya, which was resurrected in the 1960s by Kathak dancer, Uma Sharma, gave rise to the Indian classical dance of Kathak.

The phrase “play (lila) of aesthetics (rasa),” or more generally “Dance of Divine Love,” is a notion from Hinduism. Rasa means “aesthetics,” while lila means “act,” “play,” or “dance.”The rasa lila occurs one night when the Gopis of Vrindavan sneak away from their homes and families to the forest to dance with Krishna for the duration of the night, which Krishna supernaturally extends to the length of one Night of Brahma, a Hindu unit of time lasting roughly 4.32 billion years. The rasa-lila is regarded as one of Krishna’s grandest and most esoteric pastimes in the Krishna Bhakti traditions. In these traditions, romantic love between human beings in the material world is seen as merely a diminished, illusionary reflection of the soul’s original, ecstatic spiritual love for Krishna, God, in the spiritual world.
