Rama-bibha, written by Arjuna-Das, is the first long poem in Oriya language. The Jagannatha Dasa Period, as it is more often known, follows and lasts until 1700. The writings of Shri Chaitanya, whose Vaishnava influence brought about a new evolution in Oriya literature, mark the beginning of the time frame. Hindus celebrate the union of Rama and Sita at the city of Janakpurdham, which served as Mithila’s capital, on Vivaha Panchami. According to the Bikram Samvat Calendar, it is marked on the fifth day of the Shukla paksha, or waxing phase of the moon, in the Agrahayana month and in…

Regarding the religious practises of Hindus in ancient and mediaeval India, the Puranas have been regarded in India as an encyclopaedia for all people. Although some of the Puranas are substantially older, there are a few extant Puranic writings of more recent provenance that give information on how various faiths’ religious practises and beliefs developed. Sthalamahatmyas is the name for them. One such sthalamahatmya is the Kapila- Samhita, which depicts the glory of the four holy sites in Orissa: Krsna-ksetra, the well-known Purosottama-ksetra in Puri; Arka-ksetra, the well-known site of sun worship in Konarka; Parvati-ksetra, the well-known abode of Sakta-worship…

The Chandi Purana by Sarala Das, written in Odia, heralds the beginning of the age of traditional Odia literature and is based on the account of Durga’s incarnation of Chandi as told in the Vishnu Purana. However, it is not simply a fresh vernacular version of an old tale that was previously recounted in Sanskrit; rather, its goal is to convey one of the major themes of Indian mythology to the common people that myth marginalises and history excludes. And in doing so, the poet makes adjustments depending on regional faiths, ideologies, and traditions. He describes Sarala Chandi of Kanakpur,…
The physical training method known as Vyayam is intended to increase flexibility, muscular mass, and strength. It is compatible with the idea of fitness and wellness that yoga promotes. Its practise is centred on yam and niyam. But vyayam emphasises physical strength, unlike yoga. Vyayam builds on this harmonisation via callisthenic and cardiovascular exercise, whereas Hatha Yoga focuses on the balancing of all elements of the body. The comprehensive, controlled control of the body is a fundamental idea in vyayam, just like it is in yoga. However, yoga involves the practise of relatively static postures that manipulate the body. Through…

Shiva is the subject of the Hindu temple known as Brahmeswara Temple. The distance between this Temple and Bhubaneswar Railway Station in Odisha, India, is 5 km. It has intricate carvings both inside and out and was constructed towards the end of the ninth century CE. We can pretty precisely date this Hindu temple by using inscriptions that were originally on it. Although they are no longer there, records of them have been kept, providing data up until 1058 CE. In the 18th year of the Somavamsi monarch Udyotakesari’s reign, or 1058 CE, his mother Kolavati Devi constructed the temple.…
