Baudharaja Ashoka

Many people say that early Buddhist convert King Ashoka made the decision to build pillars that ascended around 50′ into the sky in order to address these issues. The Mauryan Dynasty (322–185 BCE), the first Indian kingdom, had established itself as the centre of the Magadha area in northern India, when the pillars were constructed. The virtues of King Ashoka were inscribed on these pillars together with a message of Buddhist compassion.

According to popular belief, Ashoka, the third emperor of the Mauryan dynasty, who reigned from around 279 BCE to 232 BCE, was the first significant patron of Buddhist art. After seeing the destruction caused by his invasion of the town of Kalinga, Ashoka underwent a radical conversion to Buddhism. He accepted the dharma (the law), also known as the Four Noble Truths, which are the teachings of the Buddha.
