Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha, was an itinerant ascetic and spiritual leader who lived in South Asia in the sixth or fifth century BCE and is credited with founding Buddhism.

Through the Vaishnava Puranas’ mythology, which adopts the Buddha as Vishnu’s ninth avatar, the Buddha was incorporated into Vaishnavism. The Agni Purana claims that Vishnu took on this earthly avatar as a result of the daityas’ victories over the devas in their conflicts. He tricked the asuras with his teachings to reestablish the natural order. As a result, they converted to Buddhism and left the path outlined by the Vedas, becoming bereft of dharma. At the conclusion of the Kali Yuga, causing them to be cast off to hell, devoid of good conduct. Furthermore, it causes the age to be characterised by the intermixture of the varnas and domination by the Mlecchas, barbarian and foreign forces. Subsequently, according to tradition, it became the responsibility of Adi Shankaracharya and future Vaishnava acharyas to re-establish theism.
