Indian poet Nanda Kishore Bal belonged to the first modernist movement in Odia poetry. He was born in the Odisha district of Cuttack’s Kusupur village. Rasananda Jena was his original name. His name was then changed to Nanda Kishore Bal after being adopted by her aunt. He is referred to as “Palli Kabi” (the poet of rural life) because of his delicate songs that praise the natural beauty of rural Odisha.
A poet of the rural setting, Pallikabi Nanda Kishore Bal captured its simplicity, superstitions, and celebrations. His well-known children’s song Nana Baya Gita is performed to musical accompaniment. He produced a number of poems that demonstrate his keen awareness of social issues and deep spiritual inclination. Among his collections are, Nirjharini(The Stream), Palli Chitra (The picture of countryside), Basanta-Kokila, Tarangini, Charuchitra, Nirmalya, Prabhata Sangeeta, Sandhya Sangita, Krushna Kumari and Sarmishtha.
